Variable containing XML document

Hi,

I have a variable defined in my xml as found in an example @
http://www.xml.com/pub/2000/07/26/xslt/xsltstyle.html:

	<xsl:variable name="layout" select="document('layout.xml')" />

However, I get the following error message:

	NodeTest expected here. -->document(<--'/layout.xml')
 

What's wrong?
