Igor: Bob's solution is the correct one. <xsl:element name="{@Type}">myvalue</xsl:element> works in XT and Saxon. What processor are you using? < and > are ways of escaping markup characters, but can't generally be used to create markup unless you torture your stylesheet to do so, which you really shouldn't. The question is a bit misstated -- you are not really trying to add "less than" and "greater than" signs (markup characters), but rather an element (and thus, when serialized, element markup).
