You can use @id to get the attribute value in ur XSL like this

<xsl:template match="/">
   <xsl:for-each select="STORY">
     <xsl:for-each select="AUTHOR">
       <xsl:value-of select="@id"/>
     </xsl:for-each> 
   </xsl:for-each> 
</xsl:template>
