RE: selecting a node without its children

If I have a template

<xsl:template match="STORY">
     ....
</xsl:template>

how can i get the id attribute of author inside that template?

<xsl:template match="STORY">
Author's id is: <xsl:value-of select="AUTHOR/@id"/>
</xsl:template>
