I believe that it does support modes.

I got a stylesheet to work under IE5 by replacing all instances of

<xsl:template name="X"> by <xsl:template match="*" mode="X">
and
<xsl:call-template name="X"/> by <xsl:apply-templates select="." mode="X"/>

They aren't precisely equivalent (affects position() and last()) but near
enough for most purposes.
