I found 'XML Bible' by Elliott Rusty Harold (isbn 0764532367) very useful for XML, XSL and CSS coverage. I also found 'XML and Java Developing Web Applications' by Hiroshi Maruyama, et al (isbn 0201485435) useful. Also, check out xmlsoftware.com, download some of the tools and start digging into the documentation and examples.
