I think it's likely that John Cowan's alpha code is a lot more thoroughly
tested than anything you might write for yourself. And he publishes the
source.

(Incidentally, I wrote my own version of the thing before John published
his, mine subsequently lapsed into disuse, but will reappear in the next
SAXON version).
