Note that XSLT doesn't act directly on XML documents; it acts on an interpretation of the document called a source tree, which is mostly described in the Data Model section of the XPath spec. Since certain characters like ampersands, angle brackets, and quote marks have special meaning in XML and in the XPath/XSLT data model, you may find it is not possible to access those literal characters when they are used as markup rather than character data.
