Unless I'm missing something, this is not so hard, is it? I added an
attribute to your tree to give me something to activate on.

tree.xml:
<A>
  <B>
    <C/>
  </B>
  <B>
    <C/>
    <C activate="yes"/><!--call template with current() here -->
  </B>
  <B>
  </B>
</A>

showpath.xsl:
<?xml version='1.0'?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
  xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">

<xsl:output method="text"/>

<xsl:template match="*">
  <xsl:if test="./@activate='yes'">
    <xsl:for-each select="ancestor-or-self::*">
      <xsl:call-template name="print-step"/>
    </xsl:for-each>
  </xsl:if>
  <xsl:apply-templates select="*"/>
</xsl:template>

<xsl:template name="print-step">
  <xsl:value-of select="name()"/>
  <xsl:text>:</xsl:text>
  <xsl:value-of select="1+count(preceding-sibling::*)"/>
  <xsl:text>.</xsl:text>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

Result:
A:1.B:2.C:2.
