You have to have an entity before you can resolve it. What you want is called "cleanup" :) Do it by hand. There's no easy way for a parser to read the document and know for sure that an instance of the &, <, or > characters are intended to be just those characters, or markup. That's why you should make sure that any data you're putting into a PCDATA section has those characters properly encoded as entity references.
