I just don't understand why these are the only technologies every listed.

What about:

4. Perl
5. Python
6. Omnimark
etc ..

Particularly look at Omnimark's processing
model before considering these things further.

Even if you don't want to use it, it does
indicate how a third processing mechanism
can be implemented.
