Not quite true; whitespace is significant if it appears in a text node that also includes non-whitespace, but it is insignificant otherwise. Whether the owning element has mixed content is immaterial. So: <p> Which of the following cities is the capital of USA? </p> Outputs a new line before and after the text, while <p> <!--c-->Which of the following cities is the capital of USA?<!--c--> </p> doesn't.
