but if you use

<!ENTITY cent   "&#162;">

no error is signaled.

I took this definition from a DTD of entity definitions (for XHTML) at
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/HTMLlat1x.ent

On the other hand, the output is:

(like the entity definition on your first post).

I don't know why that is.
