I think David has given you the best answer.

Your requirement as you've described it is so much simpler than the obscure problem we were trying to solve earlier (the determination of ancestry for a given node by a condition).

Your problem is a typical problem for rendering transformation and is solved quite easily ... the other problem was more theoretical in nature and required more of an obscure approach.

I've diligently read through all of the W3C spec in detail, and
I can piece together bits from reading everyone's suggestions, but some of
it just baffles me, and all I want it to do is go find 0039-310X and then
simply walk back up (per Ken Holman, but I got lost in his code
eventually)

<sigh/>

It wouldn't be inappropriate to post a request for clarification to this list ... those of us who volunteer answers wouldn't want to leave you hanging. Even if I am carried away with clients and can't volunteer a response, others could. I don't always have the time to contribute to the list but there are many who do.

Let us know what you found confusing. This list is supposed to help, not obfuscate.
