Ah but what I gathered from your other reply is that you are using IE5.
Unless I am mistaken the language called XSL in IE5 does not have
variables. Hence your problem.

If you are using IE5 _don't_ base your XSL on any documents written this
year, they will only confuse, just stick to the documentation on the
msdn site.

Or alternatively use an implementation of XSl that machtes the W3C spec
(such as xt, oracle XSL, lotusXSL, saxon, ...)
