Given the second option (document is rendered on the client side). How does one actually specify to use a style sheet? I was initially guessing that the web page is simply directed to the xml file and the rest is done for you. However, many style sheets may apply to one document type, and it seems there must be some standard way of telling the web browser which style sheet to use. So how do you actually specify a style sheet when viewing an xml document? Another possibility, which you don't mention, is that the web browser has an XSL processor that understands XSL formatting objects, it downloads the XML file and renders it according to the corresponding XSL stylesheet. This approach doesn't use HTML at all. There is a perl implementation of XSL mentioned at http://www.xmlsoftware.com/xsl/ I don't know how complete and up to date it is, but you can take a look! Is it intended that 1. an XSL processor sits on the server end, and generates html files? Or 2. the web browser has an XSL processor, and so it downloads the XML file and corresponding XSL style sheet and generates the html itself? Does anyone know of any perl implementations of an XSL processor?
