To follow-up on my last post with a bit more 
authoritative information, check out JSP 1.0 spec at
http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/techinfo.html
and I think your questions will be answered in
the sections of the spec entitled, 
"Why an XML Representation," and
"Transforming JSP Pages into an XML Document,"
as well as JSP 1.1 in Appendix C.
