answers:
1) no, they are important
2) yes, with the right constructs (object based for example)
3) absolutely
4)again a big yes - alternatives: DSSSL, STTS, XScripts, Omnimark, Balise,
etc... Depend if you prefer "()", "<>", "{}" etc...
