You may also wish to try declaring some of your perl code as xml
entities.  To do this, you may have to also use the correct perl syntax
of single (instead of double) quotation marks so nothing gets
interpreted coming from the xsl engine.

One easier solution may be to have an intermediate step like using the
xsl to produce output to a cgi script which in turn generates the
required perl output.
