Depending on which version of Word 97 you have, your attempt to
convert to Word 6 format may have instead converted the file to RTF
(explaining the large size increase). Select Help|About from the main
menu--if it says "Word 97 SR-1" or something similar, you're okay. If
it just says "Word 97" you need to install the service release
(available for download from Microsoft's web site), which will give
you the ability to convert a Word 97 file to genuine Word 6 format.
