select element style
I had tried inverting the style rule order - it had no effect. BUT - then I
read on the MS site that you had to first define a default style for all
elements, and when I included this first:

<rule>
 <target-element/>
 <SPAN>
 <children/>
 </SPAN>
</rule>

the rest worked fine.
