Apparently, global variables are to be are to be static and read-only in XSL.  It makes sense.

I think the answer to my questions about dynamically changing the behavior of the rendered style during run-time is to use the Document Object Model (DOM) and externally manipulate the XSL before render-time.  Now, I'll have to explore how DOM and XSL are going to work together.

I'll keep reading.
