Why do you think mutiple smaller files helps collaboration?
Because if you want multiple people to work on a stylesheet, then you
need to define their (rough) areas of responsibility, and splitting the
code to reflect those areas of responsibility is as convenient a way as
any of saying "I'll work on this bit, you work on that bit."
