i didn't follow your code in detail, but a couple of observations

<xsl:with-param name="parentcatid" select="."/>
<xsl:with-param name="parentcat" select="."/>

do you really want both those params to have the same value?

<xsl:if test="string($parentcatid)"> <xsl:param name="parentc

you can't have an xsl:param inside an if construct they must be all together as the first things in the template.
