Can someone help me with what's no doubt a very simple problem.

With a simple solution in this basic case.

How do I avoid unwanted namespace declarations appearing in output from
XSLT created by xsl:copy-of?

Using copy-namespaces="no" as an attribute to <xsl:copy-of> because you are using XSLT 2.0.

It gets more complex in XSLT 1.0 or if you wanted to keep other namespaces but not a subset of them. That involves creating template rules and reconstituting matched nodes.

I hope this helps.
