I can try to provide a more thorough response later, but right now
I've gotta run, so I'll quickly point out that each of the actual
roman numerals you want to convert does *not* have a letter before or
after. Adjusting your regexp to test for that will fix your problem.
But it may mean you need 2 tests, depending on end-of-string and
begining-of-string conditions.

   ^(.*[^A-Za-z])(IVXL]+)([^A-Za-z].*)$
   ^(IVXL]+)([^A-Za-z].*)$
   ^(.*[^A-Za-z])(IVXL]+)$
