You'll need to describe what you are doing, to generate 

<Article  id="abc">
     <author type="string">Joan Smith</author>
</Article>

using XSLT you can use the syntax


<Article  id="abc">
     <author type="string">Joan Smith</author>
</Article>

so presumably you have a different problem?
