I would caution you to find out what the person/system that created the file (I'm sorry, I can't call it XML; it isn't) intended that character to mean. It this was intended to be meaningful, don't just remove it; replace it with an XML-legal way to express what the person/system creating the data wanted to express.


While it is possible that these are meaningless characters and can simply be removed it is, in my opinion, very bad practice to assume that anything you have problems with is meaningless and to simply throw it away.
