you don't say what processor you are using for converting the XML to PDF
and any line breaking is processor specific.
If you are going via XSL-FO it will again depend on the FO processor you
are using which may have options to allow linebreaking after explicit
hyphens and perhaps afer explicit ) ?  inot, you don't want to add a
vsible space, perhaps line breaking would also happen on a zero-width
space (eg & #x200b;) You should be able to automatically add such spaces
(using xpath 2 replace() function or a xslt 1 recursive replace template
as part of your general transformation.
