You're welcome. But before we take another look at the problem (I'm sure
it is solvable), is it possible for you to switch to XSLT 2.0? This kind
of problem is a magnitude easier in 2.0 than it is in 1.0!

I'm limited to Xalan as my XSLT processer.  My understanding is Xalan
only supports XSLT and XPath 1.0, but if I'm wrong we may have a
winner...

I'm actually rather envious of the additional stuff one can do with
2.0, but that's a whole other topic. =)
