Basically you are arguing that the xhtml schema (and DTD) should not
default these values. There is a lot to be said for that argument, but
this is the wrong list for that. The (X)HTML working groups have just
this week been rechartered to update the (X)HTML specs, you could
suggest this change over on www-html.
