If you know that sortBy is /items/sortBy then the chances are that would
be a lot quicker, *//sortBy says to search the entire document to
arbitrary depth (but start searching on grandchildren).
Hopefully your system will optimise it (as the semantics of string() (in
XSLT 1) mean only the first one will be used, so the search may stop
without checking the whole document, but giving your system a help can
never hurt (much).
