Thanks for your feed-back, all of you!
With the missing "/" (I'm embarrassed), at least saxon:evaluate is
working:-)

I already have considered generating a stylesheet (or actually several
stylesheets as we're talking about conversion to/from a number of formats),
but so far I have some open questions about conversions of groups
(maxOccurs>1)... 
Unfortunately I'll miss XML 2006, but I'll check if the papers will be
published!

I think that for this kind of problem, generating a stylesheet might be a
better approach than saxon:evaluate. It ends up being more extensible if you
want to add features like translating data values or grouping adjacent
values.
