In XSLT1 an arbitrary restriction means that the variable is called a result tree fragment rather than a node set (the only difference being that you can't do what you want to do) most procesoors have an xx:node-set extension function that alows you to go select="xx:node-set($options)/option[@value='xxxxx']"/> where xx is bound to whatever namespace they need: eiether a system-specific namespace or EXSLT namespace.
