an alphabet:
abc.tex
<hmm>
<x>A</x>
<x>B</x>
...

<xsl:variable name="maindoc" select="/"/>
<xsl:for-each select="document('abc.tex')/hmm/x">
... make the heading based on the letter <xsl:value-of select="."/>
make a link if test="$maindoc//dir[contains(@path,concat('-- ',current(),' --'))]"
