Call Template processing problem

I am trying to call a template with 2 parameters and am having some
problems.  The second parameter of the following call always returns an
empty string.  I am using MSXML.  Here is the appropriate code.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
	xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
   <xsl:output method="html" version="4.0" indent="yes"/>

   <xsl:template name="test">
       <xsl:param name="sstr" />
       <xsl:param name="length1" />
         (<xsl:value-of select="$length1"/>)---[<xsl:value-of
select="$sstr"/>]
  </xsl:template>

   <!--============================  Start of TAB
============================-->
   <xsl:template match="/">
		<xsl:call-template name="test">
			<xsl:with-param name="length1" select="2" />
			<xsl:with-param name="sstr" select="somestring"
/>
		</xsl:call-template>
   </xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.
