Thanks, this at least confirms that this is missing functionality in XSLT v1. I would have thought this would be built in functionality, or some way to work around it. The saxon tokenize() works for me in this case.

Unless you are using saxon (or similar) in which case you can use the saxon:tokenize extension function to do the same as above (with slightly different syntax).
