don't (ever) use disable-output-escaping unless you are sure you are in
some special case where you might need it. It is a deprecated (and
optional) feature, and isn't supported in firefox (or many other
products where the result is passed as an in-memory tree rather tahn
being serialised as an xml file).

the faq and archives of this list have many examples of a replacement
template to convert newlines to br elements.
