OK, so no takers, huh? :) I'm sure my explanations were as clear as mud, but anyways I think I may have come up with a solution... select the following::item[1] (the parent) instead and make that the context node (also send the <id> as a parameter to the recursive template) and then you can just select <code> because it is in context for matching <id> records.
