Jon,
At 04:08 PM 8/31/2005, you wrote: Hmmm, I think either gmail on the output or some other other process was a little too helpful in escaping my original. It happens. The basic point was that you're not creating an element really here, you're creating an comment that has something inside of it that looks like an element. So you just do the comment and then do some escaping for characters that would through an error. Exactly. On the other hand, I haven't noticed gmail doing this before...will have to do some test runs to see if it is gmail or something else. Would hate to think that it could crop up again when I'm trying to give advice It's not a perfect system, and it's not just your mailer, it could be anything. Email was never perfect and it's been especially troublesome for writing about markup since people had the hare-brained idea of "improving" it with markup. (A markup-in-email system isn't impossible in theory, it's just a very bad idea given the email we have. And an XML-based email system would probably not be my choice of medium for discussing XML, for reasons not unrelated to this thread.) It still makes me queasy doing this hack for just IE ;). Yes me too, but it's good of us not to prejudge others' requirements isn't it? The list of possible worlds is large, and there could be good reasons for almost anything. (Topic for a later thread: How do I shoot myself in the foot with XSLT?) Anyway thanks; I hope it's working for the OP. Cheers, Wendell
