element to root

Hi all,

I am still struggling with having to convert:

    span a text 1
    <span style="style b">
      span b pre br text
      <br name="b"/>
      span b post br text
    </span>
    span a text 2
  </span>
</p>

TO:

  <span style="style a">
    span a text 1
    <span style="style b">
      span b pre br text
    </span>
  </span>
  <span style="style a"/>
  <br name="b"/>
  <span style="style a">
    <span style="style b">
      span b post br text
    </span>
    span a text 2
  </span>
</p>

I need to move all 'br' elements to the root yet
maintain the integrity of all the existing textual
styling.

Any ideas would be appreciated.  Thanks!
