Glad to help.  Once you realize that XSLT is treating it as a string
and can't make a node-set out of it it gets easier.  I'm sure I
glossed over some distinctions in calling it a "string" but it works
for now.

When I was talking about the bad setup the encoding wasn't the issue
(the encoding will be affected by the parser in any case). It's the
embedding.   I try to avoid embedding markup inside other markup as
much as possible.  It creates a lot of minefields like the above as
well as making it difficult at times to check for validity or even
well-formness. Namespaces can be a bit daunting, but would probably be
far better for this task.  Of course, I'm not really happy with any of
the current solutions for these types of issues.  I've run into
similar issues as I've tried to get databases, legacy formats, and xml
all to play along nicely.  It can be a headache.
