add namespace to schema
Thanks for the code but it has one of the problems I was trying to avoid - you have to have the namespace defined on the stylesheet element. I was trying to avoid this because some of these namespaces will change with time (we version our namespaces).

I'm beginning to think that I'll have to either have a preprossing step that generates a stylesheet with the namespaces or to post process the resulting schema and add the namespaces that way.

We are trying to externalize the things that change outside the stylesheet. This is why the information about the namespace is in the source file.

Hi,
         Please find below sample stylesheet that reads namespace prefixes
and associated namespace from external file and adds the namespaces to the
xsd:schema element before writing to output.

Note however that for each prefix specified in the external file, the
corresponding declaration has to be added to the xsl:stylesheet element.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
                  version="1.0"
                  xmlns:xalan="http://xml.apache.org/xalan"
                  exclude-result-prefixes="xalan"
            xmlns:xsd="schema ns"
            xmlns:prefix=" foo namespace"
            xmlns:yy=" yy namespace"
            xmlns:acord-doc=" adoc namespace"
            xmlns:jag=" jag namespace"

            >
<xsl:output method="xml" indent="yes" />

<xsl:template match="/">

<xsd:schema>
      <xsl:variable name="rtf">

<xsl:for-each select="document('nmspaces')/namespaces/namespace">
     <xsl:attribute name="{@prefix}:foo"/>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:variable>
     <xsl:for-each select="xalan:nodeset($rtf)/xsd:schema//*">
       <xsl:copy-of select="name(.)"/><xsl:text>,</xsl:text>
     </xsl:for-each>

</xsd:schema>

</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>

My external file looks like this:

<namespaces>
<namespace prefix="xsd">w3c url</namespace>
<namespace prefix="yy">ACORD default URL</namespace>
<namespace prefix="acord-doc">ACORD doc URL</namespace>
<namespace prefix="xml">W3C url for XML namespace - need for xml:lang
use</namespace>
<namespace prefix="jag">ACORD JAG URL</namespace>
</namespaces>
