<xsl:variable name="endline" select="'
x;'"/>
that's not well formed XML, your stylesheet should not have parsed
(spurious x in a hex number)
<xsl:value-of select="concat('The current node is ',
current())"/>
current() is like . here
you are using it in value-of so you get the string value of teh selected
node, but as these are empty elements you get the empty string.
