oh I should have said, probably just using 
<xsl:number/>
would also give you what you want (and might b emore erricient than
using count() on preceding::, I seem to remember Michael saying saxon
(at least) spots when consecutive executions of xsl:number are going to
just increase some count by 1, and just does that internally rather than 
really doing the count each time.
