xsl translate replace
I see that I need to re-read the new features list for 2.0. I had 
forgotten about replace(). 2.0 definitely has some nice new toys.

it's simpler than that, in 2.0 you can do

<xsl:value-of select="replace(@software, ';', ', ')"/>
