You can't use [] predicates with / in Xpath1 expressions or patterns,
despite the fact that if it were allowed they would have an obvious
meeaning. It's just one of those things..

In an expression you can use (/)[some-node] but that format isn't allowed
in a match pattern 

but you can do

/*[self::some-node]

so all is not lost:-)
