Isn't this some of those "heavy-weight" instructions if the XML is big?
yes but I usually work on a principle of get it working before speeding
it up.
If you prefer:
<xsl:key name="x" match="user" use="@uid"/>
<xsl:template match="user">
<xsl:if test="key('x',@uid)[2]">
<xsl:message>oops</xsl:message>
</xsl:if>
