You don't say why you are writing the nodes out to a file and reading them back in, that isn't particuarly quick, why not just apply templates to the nodes you started with? I would assume that redirect:write is picking up attributes from an xsl:output that has indent="yes" so that the temp file has indentation. If that is the case you could presumably use indent="no", although why not just do <xsl:apply-templates select="articledescription/node()" mode="proc-txt"/> and work directly of your original input?
