The presence of a UTF-8 BOM affects only the parsing - not the XSLT
processor.

In fact, I cam across just this problem using Saxon 8.1.1 on my Linux
system, so switching to Saxon might not be a cure.
The XML parser was ... whatever happens to be the JAXP default on my
system (I don't know).
